CASTLE KARLŠTEJN - HISTORY
Karlstejn castle occupies among Czech castles exceptional position.
Build it gave the Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV. as a place to store royal treasures of the imperial
crown jewels and collections of holy relics.
Laid the foundation stone of the castle Archbishop Arnost of Pardubice, Friday June 10, 1348 in the presence of many important nobles of the Czech Kingdom.
Charles IV himself. stayed at the castle in the year 1355, there oversaw the building works and decoration of the interiors, especially the castle chapels.

At the beginning of the Hussite wars were for safety reasons at Karlstejn the Czech coronation jewels, which were here with short breaks for about 200 years. Hussites conquered the castle in the years 1421 - 1422, but the castle was never conquered.
In 1648 the castle tower in addition to the Great conquered the Swedes, who caused considerable damage to the castle.
Karlstejn was rebuilt several times. Following in 1480 was modified in late Gothic style, at the end of the 16th century in the Renaissance. When the last time from the late 19th century by architect Josef Mocker in the spirit of purism, won the castle its present appearance.
Very impressive the preservation of a tiered arrangement of buildings. The lowest are operating as part of the outer ward, and the Well Tower Purkrabský palace.
